ALICE HAMBURG EMERGENCY GRANT GUIDELINES

About the Foundation
The Agape Foundation Fund for Nonviolent Social Change is a non-profit public foundation founded in 1969 out of opposition to the war in Southeast Asia. Pacifists, World War II conscientious objectors and anti-Vietnam War activists established it in order to build a movement that seriously challenged the Pentagon and the American culture of violence. The Foundation’s purpose is to fund nonviolent social change organizations committed to peace and justice issues. Unlike social services that aid and assist individuals, social change efforts confront the root causes of social problems by challenging the responsible systems and institutions.

Emergency Grants
The Alice Hamburg Emergency Grant Fund, established in 1991 by donors in opposition to the Gulf War, helps groups respond to unforeseen events. The Board of Trustees makes competitive emergency grants throughout the year to organizations that fit the funding priorities listed below.

Issue Areas
Agape provides Emergency grants if there is a critical, unexpected event that arises which requires an immediate response. The event must be unforeseen and there must be no funds allocated for this event. The organization must show that resources are not available, warranting an Emergency Grant.

Agape considers the following to be examples of an emergency: an organized response to a military mobilization and or action; an organized response to an environmen-tal disaster; support for a protest or mobilization in response to a government or corporate action.

Agape considers the following not to be an emergency: a foreseen event where fundraising fell short; travel and related expenses to a conference or planned meeting; budgetary shortfalls for operating expenses.

Agape Foundation considers proposals for an Emergency grants from organizations that promote peace and social justice. Agape does not fund social service or direct service organizations unless they have a major advocacy component. The following are examples of some of the issue areas Agape funds:

• Peace – anti-military and anti-nuclear
• Environmental justice and protection
• Community building – Building nonviolent alternatives, nonviolent conflict resolution, alternatives to gang violence
• Human Rights – civil rights, lesbian/gay/bi-sexual/transgendered rights and women’s rights
• Economic justice
