Spring 2009 - GUIDELINES FOR ORGANIZATIONS
Submission Deadlines
Letters of Intent (LOIs) may be submitted any time before 5 pm, Monday, August 3rd, 2009. Staff will review and inform applicants of request for full proposal or rejection within 72 hours. Applicants must use Agape’s LOI form.
Deadline for receipt of full proposals, if requested: 5 pm, Tuesday, September 1st, 2009.

We do not accept proposals by fax.
Funding Areas:
Peace – Promotion of alternatives to violence,
militarism, and war, including nonviolent conflict resolution; alternatives
to nuclear power, weapons and waste.
Human Rights – Defense of civil rights, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender
rights, women’s rights or racial justice.
Environmental Protection – Defense of the environment,
ecological restoration and environmental justice.
Economic Justice – Promotion of solutions to economic
inequality.
Grassroots Organizing – Support for campaigns
that help local residents to call for peaceful solutions to injustice
and inequity.
Progressive Arts & Media – Distribution of media
projects that support grassroots organizing and promotes peace and
justice. (Applicants in this area should carefully review the Agape
Foundation’s Grant Guidelines for the Distribution of Media
Projects, a separate document available at www.agapefdn.org)
Eligibility Criteria:
The Agape Foundation considers applications from organizations that:
• Are located in California and focus their
work here.
• Have been in existence for five years or less.
• Have an annual budget or expenditures under $100,000.
• Promote social change by challenging the systems and institutions
that perpetuate inequity and violence. Agape does not
fund direct service organizations unless they also have a major
advocacy component.
• Demonstrate a commitment to grassroots participation.
• Practice and promote nonviolence in their organizational
structure, process and actions.
• Have staff (paid or volunteer) that are representative of
and emerge from the constituencies they serve.
• Are tax-exempt or fiscally sponsored.
Please Note: An organization can receive a grant only once in a
12-month period and proposals from organizations that have not previously
received grants from the Agape Foundation will be given priority.
Grant Range and Use:
Board of Trustees grants range from $1,000 to $5,000 for a six-month
period. The Agape Foundation will accept proposals for general
support as well as for program expenses.
Application Instructions:
If requested by staff, please submit one
copy of a written proposal in double-sided format.
Do not submit any written materials in plastic. Whether submitting
a hard copy or an electronic version, please be certain to include
all requested materials. Agape will consider your proposal
incomplete without all of these components. If any of the
items are not available or applicable, please explain.
__ Budget Sheet (see insert) - Provide actual income and expenses
for last year, and list planned expenses and income for the current
fiscal year (for your organization, NOT fiscal sponsor).
__ Narrative - Please address the following 16 points in the order
listed in no more than 5 pages.
Background:
1. Give a brief organizational history,
including the ‘why’ and ‘how’ it was formed.
2. Describe any significant successes
or accomplishments.
Organization & Structure:
3. Please list your staff, board members,
including their occupations/affiliations.
4. Describe the staff, board and,
if you have them, volunteers in terms of their race/ethnicity, class,
gender
and sexual orientation.
5. Discuss the above in relation to
the groups that are most impacted by the issues your organization
works
on. Does your organization
reflect/represent your constituency in meaningful ways? If not,
does the
organization have
this as an objective? Why or why not?
6. Describe how decisions are made
within your organization, including both those that are larger and
more strategic
and the day-to-day ones.
Guiding Philosophies:
7. Please explain into which of Agape’s
funding priorities you feel your work falls.
8. Agape is interested in funding
only organizations that focus on social change rather than direct
services.Please
discuss how your organization creates and focuses on social change
as opposed to
individual change.
9. Describe how your organization
incorporates nonviolence into its structure, processes, and activities.
10. Agape believes in the power of
collective action to affect social change. Please describe if and
how
you work with other
organizations whose missions may overlap with yours (or with those
that on the
surface might not).
Program:
11. Discuss the need for the work
for which you are requesting funds.
12. Describe your organizational strategy
and tactics.
Fundraising:
13. Describe how your organization
raises money to do its work. Be specific.
14. From a fundraising perspective,
how do you plan to increase the organization’s long-term sustainability?
15. If you are applying to other foundations
for funding, please list the foundations and the status of
your application.
Optional: Any other pertinent material - recent
newsletters, publicity flyers, newspaper articles, etc. Please
be selective
and conserve resources by choosing sparingly.
