Memorial Fund History In 1999, Ruth Davis Hultgren established the Wayne R. Hultgren Memorial Fund for Peace and Social Justice in memory of her husband. Wayne was a former naval officer, schoolteacher, carpenter, title company examiner and advertising salesman, and was best known as "The Father of Light Rail" in Sacramento. These are some of the fund's grant highlights: The Fund made its first grant in the fall of 2000 to People for Childrens Health and Environmental Justice to support residents in low to moderate-income communities deal with toxic polluters in their neighborhoods, and to consult with residents on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico about issues of environmental justice. In the spring of 2001, Danza sin Fronteras received a grant from the Fund to support their collective of Bay Area women dancers and activists who create and perform dances for social and environmental justice causes. In the fall of 2002, the Fund made a grant to The Peoples Grocery for its work developing and implementing the People's Grocery Mobile Market which sells inexpensive organic produce directly to West Oakland residents and educates them about the value of sustainable agriculture and local economy. In the fall of 2003, Whispered Media, a collective that promotes the use of video and other media tools in progressive grassroots movements, received a grant from the Fund to support the distribution of the documentary "We Interrupt this Empire," a film that documents San Franciscans' opposition to the war against Iraq, focussing predominantly the events of March 20, 2003, the day after the US invasion. |
